A short timeline of Romanian Cinema in London by Dr. Alexandru Gherman 

2003

Go Romanian! – The first Romanian Film Festival organised in the UK. Took place at London’s Other Cinema, organised by the Romanian Cultural Centre, The Ratiu Family Foundation and others. First big public exposure of new Romanian films (features and shorts) to UK audiences.

2006 

New Romanian Cinema season (2-5 February) — young Romanian directors like CristiPuiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, etc. Showed early New Wave works.

2007 - 2009

Annual Romanian Film Festival in London continues, under various themes (e.g. Past Imperfect, Future Continuous, Home and Away) with works from the New Wave, retrospectives, and important guest appearances.

2010 - 2012

Festival entitled Romanian, Adjective (7th edition) at Curzon Mayfair. Opened with Police, Adjective by Corneliu Porumboiu. Storied presence of established and emerging Romanian filmmakers continues.

2016

Revolution in Realism: The New Romanian Cinema (8-26 June) – The biggest showcase of Romanian cinema in the UK up to that point.

 

Joint effort by RCI London and BFI. Showed major New Wave films (Death of Mr Lăzărescu, 4 Months, 3 Weeks 2 Days, etc.)

2018

A Century of Romanian Cinema in London – retrospective season marking 100 years of Romanian cinema. Organized by ICR London. Romanian History Film Days, Nov 22 - 4 – themed around historical-documentary films, organized in partnership with Râșnov Film & History Festival and others. 

2023

20th edition of the Romanian Film Festival in London (Nov 30–Dec 4), held at CurzonSoho. Marks two decades of this festival.
